23-02: An Encouraging Word

An Encouraging Word

In everyone’s life, at some time, our inner fire goes out.  It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being.  We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit. ~Albert Schweitzer~

We all have times when the burdens we face seem overwhelming, or the circumstances in our life leave us feeling completely discouraged.  The surest way I have found to get out of our self imposed “funk” is to get out of ourselves and help another, to be of service to mankind.  A simple word of encouragement, gesture of kindness, or just the showing of care and compassion during those times, can lift someone from the depths of despair, rekindle the hope that is within them and get us back on the path of righteousness.  As we go about our busy day, it’s very easy to overlook these priceless opportunities.  We cry out for help or to be used for some great purpose, or be given the resources to make a difference, when all the while the ability to do so is right before us.  Every day, we can be the light that shines in a dark world for someone.  All it takes is getting up from our favorite place of rest; the pity pot.  Oh but it feels so familiar!

And we urge you, brothers, warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone.  Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else.  Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.  Do not put out the Spirit’s fire;
~1 Thessalonians 5:14-19 (NIV)~

Oh my God, my Heavenly Father you know I am always looking for opportunities to sit on my throne of pain.  Help me today to know that righteousness and perfection are truly great personal goals to have.  Let me not listen to those of the world who see righteousness as something evil, condemning, or overbearing.  I do prefer righteousness to wrongness!  Help me to stay focused on the goodness I can bring to those you place in my daily life.  Instead of my sex radar help me today to turn on my love radar that I might be aware of all the opportunities you give me today to help another brother or sister.  I do so love to focus on my own (crap) dilemmas that I use me to stay away from You.  Instead today help me to see that it is in my regard and love for my fellow man that I am given the closest glimpse of the goodness that awaits me in a life committed to You…. if I just surrender, get out of the way and let you do Your work in me.
Show me the way and I will follow!  In your name I pray. Amen

About SLAA Tilburg
