Matters of the Heart…
The most powerful agent of growth and transformation is something much more basic than any technique: A change of heart. ~John Welwood~
In order for any permanent growth and change to take place in our lives, of necessity, we must have a change of heart. Positive thinking techniques, repetitive “mantras”, or sheer will power might exact a temporary change, but ultimately we will always return to our former ways, unless there is a true change of heart. The very self-protective barriers that we create due to fear caused by previous hurts, failures and pain, also serve to keep us from receiving the transformation of heart that we desire. Open your heart, yielding to the Spirit of grace, and allow yourself to experience the liberation which comes as a result.
Thought for the day
If it is true that recovery must take place in the heart first, am I doing all that I can to get out of my head and open my heart for healing and transformation? Attendance at meetings, spiritual direction, sponsorship, prayer, meditation, reading spiritual material, intimacy with others, service work, staying away from slippery places and people coupled with a sincere desire to change are some of the things that can help us develop a heart that is open to the graces of God.
Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right, persevering, and steadfast spirit within me. ~Psalm 51:10 (Amp)~
And I will give them one heart [a new heart] and I will put a new spirit within them; and I will take the stony [unnaturally hardened] heart out of their flesh, and will give them a heart of flesh [sensitive and responsive to the touch of their God]…
~Ezekiel 11:19 (Amp)
Bring forth fruit that is consistent with repentance [let your lives prove your change of heart]…~Matthew 3:8 (Amp)~
The Lord’s servants must not quarrel but must be kind to everyone. They must be able to teach effectively and be patient with difficult people. They should gently teach those who oppose the truth. Perhaps God will change those people’s hearts, and they will believe the truth. Then they will come to their senses and escape from the Devil’s trap. For they have been held captive by him to do whatever he wants.~2 Timothy 2:24-26 (NLT)~
Heavenly Father, I ask you Lord for the wisdom and courage to begin this transformation I need to make. I know that as long as I choose to live in my head, for that long, will recovery from my addiction be totally out of reach for me.
Help me to stay in the now, surrender to you and seek the counsel of those who can help me become open to your presence in my heart each and every day.
