A Humble Reminder…
What kills a skunk is the publicity it gives itself. ~Abraham Lincoln~
Meditation/Thought of the day
There is a natural tendency for us addicts to desire recognition above all else and to be acknowledged for our accomplishments. This unhealthy desire feeds our dependence of and approval from others. Even in meetings and sometimes especially in meetings we must be ever mindful and vigilant to resist the temptation of developing a proud and haughty spirit, brought about by our short term or long time sobriety successes. Those who walk humbly, without seeking self-promotion, will ultimately be recognized for that which is most important…a fully developed character and a total reliance on God and they will be known by their fruits. Actions speak much louder than words!
Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall. ~Proverbs 16:18 (NKJV)~
For there shall be a day of the Lord of hosts against all who are proud and haughty and against all who are lifted up–and they shall be brought low.
~Isaiah 2:12 (Amp)~
Whoever exalts himself [with haughtiness and empty pride] shall be humbled (brought low), and whoever humbles himself [whoever has a modest opinion of himself and behaves accordingly] shall be raised to honor. ~Jesus / Matthew 23:12 (Amp)~
The Lord has used his powerful arm to scatter those who are proud. He drags strong rulers from their thrones and puts humble people in places of power.
~Luke 1:51,52 (CEV)~
And all of you, serve each other in humility, for “God sets himself against the proud, but he shows favor to the humble.” So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and in his good time he will honor you.
~1 Peter 5:5-6 (NLT)~
Heavenly Father, I know that you are the only one I need approval from. Help me today to not be consumed by my enormous appetite for recognition. Whether it is in the work area, the board room or at 12 step meetings let me rejoice at the good work others do and help me be mindful of the works you have set aside for me that are to be carried out simply and humbly without any attempt on my part to seek the glory that truly belongs to you and you alone. Help me to stay in your will today. Amen
