Who to Turn To…
I have been driven many times to my knees by the overwhelming conviction that I had nowhere to go. My own wisdom, and that of all about me, seemed insufficient for the day. ~Abraham Lincoln~
For those who believe in God it’s comforting to know, that when we have reached the end of all that is in our power to do, there is yet somewhere that we can go for help. By far, the most powerful tool in our tool box is the power of prayer (praise, worship, thanksgiving and supplication). This being the case, why then, do we so often wait until we have exhausted all other alternatives, and have nowhere else to turn? Pray now…do it often…in times of trouble, and in times of triumph!
Thought for the day
I believe that in order for prayer to grow in effectiveness certain spiritual conditions must be met by the petitioner. Above all we must approach prayer with a high degree of humility and repentance of our life as sinners. Remember what Jesus thought of the Pharisee’s prayer sitting in the back of the temple as he compared himself proudly to the poor desperate man sitting in the front of him. Jesus dismissed the Pharisee’s petition and rebuked him for his shallow attempt to pray.
For those of you getting started adding prayer to your daily life there is a set structure to prayer that has made it easy for me and many others to remember its order. When followed you will not only feel guided but your prayers will grow mighty in their effect.
Follow the Acronym A.C.T.S. as in the Acts of the Apostles.
A- Acclamation– Praise must come first. God is not a sugar daddy!
C- Confession– Confess your life as a daily sinner, not only accounting for your sins of commission, but also your sins of omission, listing daily the many opportunities of service to your brothers that you pass on because they do not fit your schedule.
T- Thanksgiving- Give thanks for everything good in your life and pick something each day to be specifically thankful for.
S- Supplication– This is where specific petitions come. What is it that you need? Be specific. If you need $817.17 for rent, then ask God to grant you $817.17
If you will follow the structure given to you above I will guarantee that your petitions will be well received by Our Lord and your prayer life will grow in effectiveness. Read my example below in the prayer section.
For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers… ~1 Peter 3:12~
…The earnest (heartfelt, continued) prayer of a righteous man makes tremendous power available [dynamic in its working]. ~James 5:16 (Amp)~
Do not fret or have any anxiety about anything, but in every circumstance and in everything, by prayer and petition (definite requests), with thanksgiving, continue to make your wants known to God. And God’s peace [shall be yours, that tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation through Christ, and so fearing nothing from God and being content with its earthly lot of whatever sort that is, that peace] which transcends all understanding shall garrison and mount guard over your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. ~Phillipians 4:6, 7 (Amp)~
A- Father God, I come to you today and I praise you for your goodness, your power, your mercy, your unconditional love for me your son, but most of all Lord I praise you for your patience with me because indeed you are the God of the 2nd chance, and in my case the 3rd, 4th, 5th and the many chances I have received from you.
C- I confess to you Abba that I have sinned against you and continue to do so in spite of my best intentions. Like yesterday, when I did not stop to help the man on the road stranded in his car. For those times that I have sinned and failed to recognize opportunities to help my brothers and sisters, I beg your forgiveness and commit to sin no more with your help.
T- Lord, I give you thanks for everything in my life because I know that you are the source of all goodness and there is nothing I value that does not come from you. Today I want to give you thanks for my PC that allows me to communicate with so many and helps me in my daily walk with you.
S- Lord I come to you today in need of discernment as I consider Nat as a girlfriend. She is Buddhist Lord but she has a heart of gold and is committed to serving her fellows. Please direct me spiritually to do what you would have me do, instead of allowing me to set the priorities that are important for me to judge her by. Help me to consider her with your priorities and not mine…in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen
If you have read this prayer and grown in your understanding of structure in prayer, I would like you to reply to this email and let me know that. It’ll help me to also know how many of you actually read the prayers that accompany these meditations.
